Oil Painting Restoration  :  Cleaning

Thomas Luny       Oil paint on canvas

This painting had been restored and lined before. It had suffered from flaking paint and had been punctured due to the perished state of the canvas. During cleaning the old dirt and discoloured varnish was removed.

The old restorations were disolved and the old filler removed.

After cleaning and restoration

This painting had an unusual history.

Someone had decided to add a banner  promoting National Service and paper cutout hats to the figures. It had been in a fire and had soot deposits on top of a discoloured varnish.
